If you want to tweak the way a certain media file plays or if you simply want it to play, you would normally have to spend some time on the Internet, searching for certain decoders. This happens every time we encounter a different video or audio format which the system can not recognize. Satsuki Decoder Pack is something which may help us in this regard. It is a collection of decoders and filters and they can all be activated and configured from a single interface. It also comes with Media Player Classic, so after you make your tweaks and settings, you can run a video or audio file immediately. The application also lets you associate different file formats with a media player.

The setup file is 17 Mb large. With a slower Internet connection, you might have to wait an extra minute, which isn't too long. When installing the application, you can check for a newer version with a click on a button and you can also make additional settings. By default, the recommended settings are already made, so this step is optional.

The interface consists of a control panel, where you can activate or deactivate a number of filters and decoders by clicking a check box, next to their icons. They include, but are not limited to, an Ac3 filter, VS Filter, Real Splitter, FLV Splitter, and many more. After enabling or disabling filters, you can click the Apply button on the bottom of the window and your selection will take effect. Satsuki Decoder Pack also comes with Media Player Classic which can be launched directly from the interface by clicking its icon on the interface.

Some of the filters or decoders can be configured in a very flexible way. Clicking on one of their icons will bring up a small window, full of settings to be made. Depending on the filter you want to configure, you will either encounter a window with a navigation pane on its left side or a tabbed one. In any case, there are lots and lots of settings you can make to most of the filters. For example, when configuring a FFDshow filter, you can make settings regarding cropping, post processing, picture properties, levels, offset and flip, resize and aspect and the list goes on. These are just categories of settings you can access on a navigation pane. Clicking on one of them will display a wide range of options on the main part of the configurations window.

Satsuki Decoder Pack lets you associate files with players. You can switch between the filters view and the associations view with the aid of navigation tabs, found on the main interface. Under the Associations tab, you can find a list of video formats and one with audio formats. Both lists are quite long, so you will have to scroll for some time in order to find a specific format. Fortunately, you can add your favorite formats to a third list, so next time you look for it, you can find it a lot easier. To add it, simply type the format in a small dialog box and click an Add button. To associate a format, you must click its designated check box in one of the lists, and choose which program to associate it with by browsing for its .exe file. Once this is done, simply click the Associate button on the bottom of the window.

Pros

Satsuki Decoder Pack features a large collection of decoders and filters and some of them can be configured in a very flexible way. The application also allows associating certain file formats with any media player.

Cons

Some of the configurations can be a bit overwhelming for novice users. Satsuki Decoder Pack offers a large array of decoders and filters which you can apply with a click of the mouse. The number of adjustments you can make to a filter will certainly satisfy your needs.
